As the New Year rolls in, many of us find ourselves reflecting on ways to improve. Setting resolutions can feel overwhelming, but choosing one word to guide you through the year can spark significant transformation. Last year, the word “Radical” was my chosen word. On the surface, it felt intimidating, yet it quickly turned into a liberating force in my life.
My journey was anything but ordinary. I stepped outside my comfort zone, embracing radical changes in my health and wellness approach. This transformation not only brought clarity and balance back into my life but also positively influenced the lives of those I coach.

Embracing the Radical Shift
Before this radical year, I often adhered to conventional norms of health as a nurse. I followed established guidelines closely, but the word “Radical” motivated me to rethink those principles. I started exploring intermittent fasting as an effective health tool. Research shows that intermittent fasting can lead to weight loss, improved metabolic health, and even enhanced cognitive function. For me, it triggered a release from decades of chronic pain.
This journey has taught me an important lesson: health care professionals don't know it all. The more I explored, the clearer it became how much more I had to learn about my own body, nutrition, and lifestyle choices. For instance, studies indicate that individuals who adopt intermittent fasting can lose between up to 8% of their body weight in up to 24 weeks.
Discovering Biohacking
Venturing into biohacking uncovered new avenues for health improvement. It became my mission to promote the body’s natural healing processes. I learned that by eliminating unhealthy cells and nourishing my body correctly, I could enhance my well-being significantly.
For example, I incorporated the concept of autophagy, which is the body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells to regenerate new ones. Engaging with this process through fasting drastically changed my perspective on health. It shifted my approach from being reactive to proactive. I began to appreciate the role of detoxification in maintaining a healthy body. Knowledge gained through articles and scientific journals fueled my passion for this journey.

A Shift in Branding and Purpose
This new understanding translated into a desire to redefine my purpose. I rebranded my practice from "My 4D Wellness" to "Balance by Brooks." This change represented a pivotal moment in my coaching journey.
Many clients expressed struggles with finding personal balance in their physical health, mental well-being, or lifestyle choices. It became clear that guiding individuals towards restoring equilibrium was essential. A study by the American Psychological Association found that stress management strategies are most effective when integrated into everyday routines. Traditional methods had often overlooked the link between lifestyle factors and health outcomes.
Restoring Balance through Functional Health
The concept of balance struck a profound chord with me as I integrated functional health principles into my coaching. I observed a pattern: unbalanced individuals—whether due to toxin exposure, stress, or unaddressed health issues—struggled to maintain their overall well-being.
By adopting a holistic approach, I was able to guide individuals back to a balanced lifestyle. Assessing lifestyle factors such as diet, movement, and sleep was crucial. I crafted tailored strategies that were both effective and accessible. For instance, a balanced diet rich in nutrients can lead to a 30% increase in energy levels and a 40% enhancement in cognitive function.
Radical Rebellion Against Conventional Wisdom
Discovering the courage to question long-held beliefs became a centerpiece of my radical shift. Why should consuming nutrient-dense foods or prioritizing restful sleep seem like "snake-oil" or "guru-ism"? Adequate sleep—around 7 to 9 hours per night—has been scientifically linked to improved metabolism and mental health.
Encouraging my clients to embrace these "radical" practices involved educating them on the significance of these lifestyle changes. Conventional wisdom has often undervalued the impact of simple wellness principles.
Creating Lasting Change
Throughout this journey, I learned that lasting change is deeply rooted in understanding the individual. Each client has a unique path to finding balance. Through thoughtful questions and thorough assessments, I could pinpoint specific areas needing attention. This radical approach transformed both my practice and the lives of my clients.
We explored solutions such as detoxification, increasing outdoor physical activities, and incorporating more whole foods into daily meals. A focus on nutritious choices has shown to improve overall health metrics significantly.
Reflections on a Year of Radical Change
